How many interview stages should Risk & Compliance roles have?

The short answer

Risk & Compliance roles should have enough interview stages to test judgement and fit, but not so many that the firm loses momentum.

The right number depends on seniority and risk level.

Junior and mid-level roles

One or two stages is usually enough. Use practical questions or a short scenario to test accuracy, judgement and motivation.

Senior roles

Senior roles may need two or three stages, including meetings with leadership, technical stakeholders and the team.

Avoid repeating the same conversation.

What to avoid

Avoid excessive panels, unclear decision-making and long gaps between stages.

Each stage should have a purpose.

Bottom line

Interview process should be proportionate.

Test properly, but move decisively.
